Using Columns to Define A Unbounded Reading Space —

Inner Forest Courtyard Library

The concept of this design is a bowl-shaped space which allocates more space to the ground level for public and provides a quiet outdoor reading space in noisy urban area. Instead of having a few thick columns, the project uses over 700 slender columns which provide a unconfined and graceful space to encourage people to walk in. A ramp spirals upward and interlocks with the columns to make the structure more stable.

The courtyard in the middle of the building reduces the depth of the interior space and brings more natural light into the space. As it opens to the downtown skyline, people can have a good view of the skyscrapers. When sliding door opens to connect the interior with the courtyard, the border between the interior and exterior spaces become blurred and bounder-less. People will enjoy the inwards outdoor space with good views around.
